چکیده

In this article we describe the latest developments of the minimally invasive hepatic surgery simulator pro totype developed at INRIA A key problem with such a simulator is the physical modeling of soft tissues We propose a new deformable model based on non linear elasticity and the nite element method This model is valid for large displacements which means in particu lar that it is invariant with respect to rotations This property improves the realism of the deformations and solves the problems related to the shortcomings of linear elasticity which is only valid for small displacements We also address the problem of anisotropic behavior and volume variations by adding to our model incom pressibility constraints Finally we demonstrate the relevance of this approach for the real time simulation of laparoscopic surgical gestures on the liver

Modelling liver tissue properties using a non-linear visco-elastic model for surgery simulation

In this work, we introduce an extension of the linear elastic tensor-mass method allowing fast computation of non-linear and visco-elastic mechanical forces and deformations for the simulation of biological soft tissue. We aim at developing a simulation tool for the planning of cryogenic surgical treatment of liver cancer. Percutaneous surgery simulation requires accurate modelling of the mecha...

Geometrically and Physically Non-linear Models for Soft Tissue Simulation

We describe extensions of the tensor-mass algorithm allowing fast computation of nonlinear and visco-elastic mechanical forces and deformations for the simulation of biological soft tissue. This work is part of a broader project aiming at the development of a simulation tool for the planning of cryogenic surgical treatment of liver cancer. Real-time deformation algorithms are usually based on l...

Applying DTI white matter orientations to finite element head models to examine diffuse TBI under high rotational accelerations.

The in-vivo mechanical response of neural tissue during impact loading of the head is simulated using geometrically accurate finite element (FE) head models. However, current FE models do not account for the anisotropic elastic material behaviour of brain tissue. In soft biological tissue, there is a correlation between internal microscopic structure and macroscopic mechanical properties. There...

Investigating Effective Parameters in Tactile Determination of Artery included in Soft Tissue by FEM

One of the newest ways of surgery is known as Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), which in spite of its benefits, because of surgeon's tactile sensing omission, causes some problems with detection of arteries and their exact positions in tissue during a surgery. In this study, tactile detection of an artery in tissue has been modeled by finite element method. In this modeling, three 2D models of ...

A Nonlinear Elastic Soft Tissue Model for Craniofacial Surgery Simulations

Biomechanical modeling of soft tissue is essential to many computer assisted medical applications. Because of complexity of soft tissue behavior and a lack of exact and comprehensive data on material properties of living tissues, simplified models such as widespread linear elastic models are usually applied. However, large deformations often occurring in craniofacial surgery can not be accurate...
